  • A shallow baking pan

Instructions:

  2. Using a sharp, serrated knife, make a small "X" or cross-shaped cut on the rounded side of each chestnut.

  3. Optional, but suggested: Parboil scored nuts for 5 minutes in boiling water for a more plump and moist nut.

  4. Place nuts, scored side up, on a baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until the outer shell curls back at the scored X.

  5. Pour the hot nuts in a hand towel, fold the sides of the towel around the nuts and lightly squeeze to further crack open the shells.

  6. When the nuts are able to be held, remove the outer shell. The warmer the nut, the easier it is to remove the shell.
